Urbana Grand Prix 2012

If you missed either of the weekend’s races you missed out, but if you could only pick one, Sunday was a real treat. The excellent weather remained in tact on Sunday and the downtown-Urbana course presented some excellent racing. 8 turns on rough tarmac meant you had to stay focused the entire time. There was simply no rest. Immediately after any of the turns you had to set up for the next one. Oddly enough, the few crashes that did happen were mostly in the straights, including a particularly bad wreck occurring in the 3′s right at the start finish with a few riders bumping their heads pretty good.

It’s not the first time I’ve seen him take control of this sort of situation, but Jostein Alvestad of the Elmhurst Masters, Elmurst Fire Department and our peloton went straight from “racing bad ass” (racking up 3 primes prior to the wreck) to instinctive first responder taking control of the post-wreck carnage until the EMT’s showed up (for those not there, the riders all appeared fine, though one was carted off just to be safe). After the race restarted he got back on it, finishing 4th. If you get a chance to see him, thank him, even if he’s never helped you before — he would if it came to it.

Tim Speciale is currently tied with Jacob Rytlewski for the fastest lap of the day Ryan Knapp turned the fastest lap of the day, a blistering 1:08. Surely all 50 in the pack were holding on for dear life that lap.
